SF6 Circuit Breaker (Medium Voltage, Environmentally Friendly Alternatives)
A medium-voltage circuit breaker (typically 6-36 kV, also used up into the high-voltage range) in which the gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) serves as the arc-quenching and insulating medium between the contacts: thanks to the very high dielectric strength and arc-quenching capability of SF6, the breaker can be built compactly while still safely interrupting large short-circuit currents. However, SF6 is a greenhouse gas with a very high global warming potential (GWP over 23,000 times that of CO2 over 100 years) and falls under the F-gas regulation, which is driving the sector towards more environmentally friendly alternatives: vacuum breakers (now the standard for most medium-voltage applications, requiring no quenching gas), dry-air-insulated switchgear (using pressurised air instead of SF6, at the cost of a larger volume) and synthetic gas mixtures based on fluoronitriles or fluoroketones (for example C4-FN or C5-PFK mixed with CO2/O2) that have a strongly reduced GWP at comparable dielectric performance. Existing SF6 installations are subject to strict requirements for leak-tightness, gas monitoring and certified gas recovery during maintenance or decommissioning.
