Petersen Coil (Resonant Earthed Neutral)
An adjustable reactor connected between the neutral point of a (typically medium-voltage) network and earth, tuned so that the coil's reactance resonates with the network's capacitive earth capacitance. In the event of a single-phase earth fault, the residual fault current is thereby limited to a very low level, allowing the network to often continue operating without immediate disconnection and permitting the earth fault to self-extinguish — this significantly improves the operational reliability of extensive networks, particularly overhead-line networks. A network with a Petersen coil is also referred to as resonant-earthed or compensation-earthed, as opposed to a directly or low-impedance earthed network.
