Magnetic Blow-Out Coil and Arc Chute (Circuit Breaker)
A construction in certain types of (power) circuit breakers where a coil, connected in series with the interrupting contact, generates a magnetic field during opening that actively pushes the resulting switching arc away from the contacts into an arc chute containing a stack of metal splitter plates. There the arc is divided into several shorter arcs in series, sharply increasing the total arc voltage and extinguishing it faster than an unguided arc would. This technique is applied particularly in low-voltage and medium-voltage air-insulated circuit breakers as an alternative to, or in addition to, quenching media such as oil, SF6 or vacuum, and is essential for reliable, fast breaking capacity at high fault currents.
