Current Transformer Knee-Point Voltage — Saturation
A parameter of a current transformer (CT) indicating the secondary voltage at which the iron core begins to saturate, defined (IEC 61869-2, class PX) as the point on the magnetising curve where a 10% increase in voltage produces a 50% increase in magnetising current. Below the knee-point voltage the secondary current remains nearly proportional to the primary current; above it, the secondary current distorts heavily due to core saturation, which in differential and earth-fault protection schemes can cause false non-tripping or maloperation. When designing a protection scheme, the knee-point voltage of the selected CT is compared with the maximum secondary loop impedance (wiring + relay) at the highest expected fault current, to avoid saturation during a fault.
