Reference Designation System (IEC 81346)
An international standard that defines a structured, hierarchical method for unambiguously designating and coding electrotechnical and other technical objects (components, systems, functions) in diagrams, drawings, and documentation, using prefixes such as '=' for the function aspect, '+' for the location aspect, and '-' for the product aspect. Consistent application of IEC 81346 allows a specific component (e.g. a circuit breaker) to be unambiguously traced across the single-line diagram, the panel layout, and the physical installation, regardless of who prepared the documentation. This is particularly relevant for larger, complex installations and for projects where multiple parties (designer, installer, facility manager) need to interpret the same documentation.
