Earth Resistance — Seasonal Variation (Frost/Drought)

Aardweerstand — seizoensvariatie (vorst/droogte)

A phenomenon whereby the measured earth resistance of an earthing system can vary considerably with the seasons, because soil resistivity depends strongly on moisture content and temperature: frozen ground and very dry ground both have much higher resistivity than moist, unfrozen ground. An earth resistance measurement taken during a wet winter period can therefore give a more favourable (lower) value than the same measurement taken during a dry summer period or during frost, even though the installation itself is unchanged in both cases. For critical applications such as lightning protection (IEC 62305-3), it is therefore advised to take measurements under unfavourable soil conditions, or to maintain a safety margin relative to the limit value, so that the earth resistance still complies even under the worst-case seasonal conditions.

Practical example
