Zone-Selective Interlocking (ZSI) — Power Circuit Breaker

Zone-selectieve vergrendeling (ZSI) — vermogensschakelaar

A protection function on electronic trip units of power circuit breakers (IEC 60947-2) in which breakers communicate via a wired signal loop to achieve discrimination without the long time delays of classic time-graded discrimination. If a downstream breaker detects a short circuit within its own zone, it sends a restraint signal to the upstream breaker so that the upstream breaker keeps its normal (longer) delay; if the upstream breaker receives no restraint signal — meaning the fault is within its own zone, downstream of that breaker — it trips almost instantaneously. This significantly shortens the effective tripping time for a fault close to the source compared with conventional time grading, without losing discrimination between stages.

Practical example
