Self-Supervising Protection Relay (Watchdog / Self-Monitoring)

Zelfcontrolerend beveiligingsrelais (watchdog / self-supervision)

A function of a numeric (microprocessor-based) protection relay (IEC 60255-1) that continuously monitors its own hardware and software in the background — including memory, the analogue-to-digital conversion, the supply voltage and execution of the protection program via a 'watchdog timer' — to flag an internal fault as quickly as possible, rather than that fault only coming to light during an actual disturbance when the relay is precisely the device that must operate. If a deviation is detected, the relay typically signals this to the monitoring system via a separate 'relay healthy' contact (energised when the relay is healthy, dropping out on a fault), and can, if desired, block itself to prevent an unwanted, unreliable trip. Self-supervision is essential because a protection relay itself often does not need to operate for years at a time; without continuous self-supervision, a creeping hardware fault could go unnoticed until, precisely at the moment of a real fault, it turns out the protection no longer works.

Practical example
