Air circuit breaker (ACB)
A power circuit breaker whose contacts switch and extinguish the arc in open air (unlike the moulded-case enclosure of an MCCB), fitted with adjustable, often electronic overcurrent protection (LSI/LSIG functions). Used as the main switch in main distribution boards with large rated currents (typically from around 630 A up to several kA), taking advantage of its adjustability, high short-circuit withstand, and withdrawable design (allowing maintenance without interrupting the rest of the installation).
Als hoofdschakelaar van de hoofdverdeelinrichting van een bedrijfsverzamelgebouw wordt een uittrekbare ACB van 2500 A toegepast, met een elektronische trip-unit die is afgestemd op selectiviteit met de onderliggende MCCB's.
Een ACB behandelen als een eenvoudige aan/uit-schakelaar en de elektronische trip-unit-instellingen (lange-tijd, korte-tijd, instantaan) nooit controleren of afstemmen op de installatie — een verkeerd ingestelde ACB kan de selectiviteit met downstream beveiligingen tenietdoen of juist te laat afschakelen bij een fout.
