Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) of Transformer Oil
A laboratory analysis of an oil sample from an oil-immersed transformer that determines the concentrations of gases dissolved in the oil (such as hydrogen, methane, ethylene, and acetylene) and relates them to one another. The nature and ratio of these gases indicate whether, and which type of, an internal fault is present — for example thermal overheating of the winding (elevated ethylene) versus an electrical arc discharge (elevated acetylene). DGA is an established, non-destructive technique for condition assessment and is repeated periodically to allow trend evaluation, complementing physical inspection and insulation resistance testing.
