Transformer Conservator — Silica Gel Breather
An expansion tank mounted on top of an oil-immersed transformer that accommodates the volumetric expansion and contraction of the insulating oil with temperature changes, so that the transformer's main tank itself always remains completely filled with oil. Because the oil level in the conservator rises and falls, the tank breathes air in and out through a breather (silica gel tube), which dries moist outside air before it enters the conservator, to limit moisture and oxygen uptake by the oil. Saturated silica gel changes colour from blue/orange to pink/white as an indication that replacement or regeneration (oven drying) is needed; a saturated or clogged breather lets moist air pass through unfiltered, which reduces the insulation and dielectric strength of the transformer oil over time.
