State of Health (SoH) — Battery
A percentage value expressing the current condition of a battery (for example a home battery or the battery pack of a large-scale storage system) relative to its factory-new state, typically calculated as the ratio between the currently available capacity and the original rated capacity (SoH = 100% for a new battery, decreasing with ageing, cyclic use and thermal stress). Unlike the State of Charge (SoC), which describes the current charge level at a given moment (0-100% of available capacity), SoH is a long-term indicator of remaining lifespan and is tracked by the battery management system based on internal resistance, capacity measurements and cycle counting. A low SoH value (e.g. below 80%) is used in many manufacturers' warranty conditions as the threshold for replacement.
Bij de jaarlijkse servicebeurt van een thuisbatterij leest de installateur via de monitoringsapp de SoH-waarde uit; bij een daling tot 82% na vijf jaar gebruik informeert hij de klant dat dit nog ruim binnen de fabrieksgarantie van 70% na tien jaar valt.
SoH verwarren met SoC en een klant geruststellen dat 'de batterij nog 90% vol is' terwijl 90% eigenlijk de actuele laadtoestand (SoC) betreft en de daadwerkelijke gezondheidsindicator (SoH) van de batterij niet is gecontroleerd.
