Shunt Trip Coil (Remote Tripping)
An electromagnetic coil fitted to a circuit breaker or MCB that, when energised from an external control circuit, causes the breaker to trip mechanically at once — regardless of the actual load current. It is used, among other things, in the fire brigade disconnector (to remotely de-energise a building's main supply), in emergency stop systems that must trip several breakers simultaneously, and in interfacing with a fire or gas detection system. A shunt trip coil works oppositely to the no-volt (undervoltage) release: the shunt trip breaker trips precisely when voltage is applied, whereas the undervoltage release trips when voltage is lost.
