Polarization index (PI test)
A ratio derived from an extended insulation-resistance test on large motors, generators and transformers (≥1 kW): PI = Riso at 10 minutes / Riso at 1 minute, at a constant DC test voltage. A PI ≥ 2 (for class B/F/H insulation) indicates dry, healthy winding insulation that keeps building up charge; a PI around 1 indicates contamination, moisture or aged insulation with no further polarisation. Above a 1-minute reading of 5000 MΩ, the PI is no longer reliably interpretable. Complements a single megohmmeter reading, especially during periodic NEN 3140 inspection of large drives.
Bij de jaarlijkse inspectie van een grote 75 kW-aandrijfmotor meet de inspecteur een PI van 2,3, wat een gezonde, droge wikkelingisolatie bevestigt ondanks de vochtige productiehal.
De PI-test toepassen op kleine, moderne apparatuur met zeer hoge isolatieweerstand (>5000 MΩ na 1 minuut) en daaruit conclusies trekken — bij zulke hoge waarden is de verhouding statistisch onbetrouwbaar en zegt een lage of hoge PI niets zinnigs over de wikkelingstoestand.
