Creepage distance and clearance
Clearance is the shortest distance through air between two conductive parts at different potential; creepage distance is the shortest distance along the surface of the insulating material between those same parts. Together with the pollution degree and material (CTI value) they determine whether switchgear or equipment can withstand flashover and tracking at a given working voltage and overvoltage category.
Bij de keuze van een schakelaar voor een vervuilde industriële omgeving (vervuilingsgraad 3) wordt een groter kruipwegoppervlak vereist dan in een schone kantooromgeving (vervuilingsgraad 1) bij dezelfde werkspanning.
Ervan uitgaan dat een grotere luchtafstand automatisch ook een voldoende kruipweg garandeert — beide worden onafhankelijk bepaald en moeten allebei aan de norm voldoen, vooral bij vervuilde of vochtige omgevingen.
