K-Factor Transformer (Harmonic Loading)

K-factor transformator (harmonische belasting)

A transformer specifically designed and rated to supply non-linear loads with a significant harmonic content (such as rectifiers, variable frequency drives, switch-mode power supplies and large amounts of LED lighting) without overheating. The K-factor (K-rating, typically K-4, K-13 or K-20) expresses how much extra eddy-current loss occurs in the windings due to higher-order harmonics compared with a purely sinusoidal load of equal RMS value: the higher the K-factor, the heavier the windings and core are built (thicker or transposed conductors, extra cooling) to absorb this additional heat generation. A standard transformer (K-1) loaded with a heavily distorted current can quickly overheat at the same RMS current level, even though an ordinary current measurement would not indicate overload.

Practical example
