Insulation monitoring device (IMD)
A continuously monitoring instrument that measures the insulation resistance between live conductors and earth in an IT system, raising an alarm as soon as it drops below a set threshold. Because an IT system continues to operate after a single earth fault, an IMD is essential to signal that first fault in time, before a second fault causes disconnection or danger.
In een operatiekamer (medische ruimte groep 2) met een IT-net waarschuwt het IMD-paneel bij de balie zodra de isolatieweerstand onder 50 kΩ zakt, zodat personeel tijdig een reparatie kan plannen zonder de operatie te onderbreken.
Het IMD-alarm negeren omdat de installatie 'toch nog gewoon werkt' — juist die doorwerkende eigenschap van het IT-stelsel maakt het IMD-signaal de enige waarschuwing vóór een gevaarlijke dubbele fout.
