Auxiliary Contact / Signal Contact (Circuit Breaker)
An additional, galvanically separated switching contact on a moulded-case/air circuit breaker (MCCB/ACB) or miniature circuit breaker that relays the switch position (on/off) or the cause of tripping (overload, short circuit, earth fault) to a control, monitoring or signalling system, without itself switching the main power circuit. Common types include the position-signal contact (OF/SD, an auxiliary contact that follows the switch position) and the trip-signal contact (SD/alarm contact, which closes only on automatic tripping by a protective function). These contacts are used for visualisation on a PLC or building management system, for driving an automatic transfer switch, or for generating an alarm, and are distinct from the main switching contact that actually interrupts the load current.
Bij een hoofdverdeelinrichting wordt het SD-signaalcontact van de hoofdschakelaar bedraad naar de PLC van het gebouwbeheersysteem, zodat een automatische uitschakeling direct als alarm op het bedieningsscherm verschijnt in plaats van pas bij een volgende controleronde te worden opgemerkt.
Het hulpcontact van een vermogensschakelaar aansluiten op een circuit met een stroom die de (veel lagere) nominale schakelcapaciteit van het hulpcontact overschrijdt — hulpcontacten zijn ontworpen voor lage stuurstromen, niet voor het schakelen van vermogens.
