Battery energy storage system (BESS)
A stationary, often containerised installation of lithium-ion (or similar) battery modules with associated inverters, a battery management system (BMS) and fire protection, deployed for grid stabilisation, peak shaving or relieving grid congestion at MV/LV level. Unlike a home battery (a few to tens of kWh), a BESS involves power ratings from hundreds of kW up to several MW; NEN-EN-IEC 62933-5-2 sets safety requirements including thermal-runaway detection, cell monitoring, ventilation and fire suppression specific to this scale.
