Breakdown voltage (dielectric strength)
The voltage at which the insulation of a material, cable, or device locally breaks down and a conductive path forms, usually expressed in kV or in kV/mm for a specific material. Verified with a high-voltage withstand test (well above operating voltage) to confirm the insulation has sufficient margin against transient overvoltages, as opposed to the insulation resistance test (Riso), which assesses insulation quality at operating voltage without destroying it.
