CTI — Comparative Tracking Index
A standardised value (in volts, determined per IEC 60112) indicating how resistant a solid insulating material is to the formation of conductive tracking paths on its surface when that surface becomes contaminated with an electrolytic pollutant (moisture, dust, salt deposits) while under voltage. The higher the CTI value, the higher the voltage the material can withstand before a continuous conductive path forms, ultimately causing a short circuit or surface fire. The CTI value partly determines the material group (I through IIIb) relevant to the creepage-distance requirements in enclosure standards such as NEN-EN 61439, particularly for outdoor or pollution-prone switchgear.
