Corrosion Class for Outdoor Switchgear Enclosures (ISO 12944)
A classification system (C1 through C5, plus CX for extreme environments) describing the corrosivity of the environment in which an outdoor metal switchgear or distribution cabinet is installed, ranging from C1 (heated indoor spaces, negligible corrosion) to C5 (industrial or coastal areas with high humidity and aggressive atmosphere, very high corrosivity). Based on this classification, the required protection system is determined — the combination of enclosure material (for example stainless steel or coated sheet steel), coating thickness and type, and expected durability of the protection — so that an enclosure in a coastal or chemical environment does not fail prematurely due to corrosion. Ignoring the correct corrosion class when selecting materials for outdoor enclosures is a known cause of premature corrosion damage to doors, hinges and cable glands, resulting in leakage and ultimately electrical faults.
