Contactor Utilization Category (AC-1, AC-3, AC-4)
A classification per IEC 60947-4-1 indicating the type of load and switching conditions a contactor or motor starter is designed and tested for, where each category prescribes a specific combination of making and breaking current (as a multiple of rated operational current) and switching frequency. AC-1 applies to non-inductive or slightly inductive loads (such as resistive heating), AC-3 to squirrel-cage motors with normal starting and stopping while running (the most common category for motor control), and AC-4 to squirrel-cage motors with jogging, reversing or plugging duty, where the contactor must switch under near-locked-rotor conditions and therefore withstands much more severe making/breaking conditions. Selecting a contactor based on rated current alone, without the correct utilization category, can lead to premature contact wear or welding.
