Buchholz Relay (Oil-Immersed Transformer)
A mechanical protection relay mounted in the oil pipe between the tank and the conservator (expansion vessel) of an oil-immersed transformer, which responds to gas evolution or oil flow caused by an internal fault. For slow, incipient faults (e.g. local overheating or a small partial discharge), gas collects in the relay and activates an alarm contact; for a fast, severe fault (e.g. an internal short-circuit), the sudden oil surge triggers a trip contact that immediately disconnects the transformer from the grid. The Buchholz relay is thus one of the few protections capable of detecting an internal transformer fault before it manifests via external electrical quantities.
Bij de periodieke inspectie van een oliegeïsoleerde vermogenstransformator controleert de inspecteur of het Buchholzrelais correct is aangesloten op het beveiligingssysteem en test hij, waar mogelijk, de alarm- en uitschakelfunctie via de daarvoor bedoelde testknop.
Het Buchholzrelais tijdens transport of onderhoud vergrendelen om onterecht alarm te voorkomen en vervolgens vergeten de vergrendeling na afloop te verwijderen — hierdoor is de transformator ongemerkt onbeveiligd tegen inwendige fouten.
