Icu/Ics Distinction (Breaking Capacity)
Two related but distinct short-circuit ratings of a circuit breaker per IEC 60947-2. Icu (ultimate breaking capacity) is the maximum short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt once, after which it is not guaranteed to remain usable and is usually replaced or thoroughly inspected. Ics (service breaking capacity) is a percentage of Icu (typically 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%, as specified by the manufacturer) that the breaker can interrupt repeatedly and still remain in normal service afterwards. When selecting a circuit breaker for a critical application (e.g. a main distribution board that must be quickly returned to service after a fault), a high Ics value is more relevant than a high Icu alone.
