Firefighter's Switch for PV Installations (Emergency Shutdown)
A clearly marked, easily accessible switching device allowing emergency services to quickly and visibly disconnect or short-circuit the section of a PV installation between the panels and the inverter (the DC side) during a fire or other incident, to reduce the risk of electrocution while fighting the fire and the DC cabling remaining live longer than necessary. Unlike an ordinary DC disconnector, which is intended for maintenance purposes, the firefighter's switch is specifically aimed at fast, unambiguous operation by emergency personnel without electrotechnical training, often marked with pictograms and a distinct colour code. On larger rooftop PV installations, 'rapid shutdown' functionality is increasingly also applied, bringing the voltage per panel or per string down to a safe level within seconds of activation.
