Automatic transfer switch (ATS)
A switching device that, upon loss of the normal mains supply, automatically transfers the load to an alternative source (e.g. a standby generator or a second mains feed) and automatically transfers back once the primary supply returns, without manual intervention. Under NEN-EN 60947-6-1, an ATS must be mechanically and/or electrically interlocked so the two sources can never be connected to the same load simultaneously (preventing parallel operation or back-feeding into the network). Often fitted with a short, adjustable delay to avoid the generator starting unnecessarily on every brief network dip.
In een ziekenhuis schakelt de ATS binnen enkele seconden na een netstoring automatisch over naar het noodaggregaat, zodat de operatiekamers zonder handmatige actie stroom blijven houden.
Een ATS zonder deugdelijke vergrendeling installeren of de vergrendeling omzeilen 'voor het testen' — hierdoor kunnen net en aggregaat kortstondig parallel komen te staan, met kans op zware kortsluitstromen en gevaarlijke terugvoeding naar het net.
